The metaverse is typically thought of as a collective, virtual community space where digitally extended physical reality and the only digitally existing virtual reality meet. The metaverse is a virtual space where virtually represented physical users (in the following considered as a form of content) using virtual or augmented reality tools can interact with each other and with computer algorithms (agents) and perform collective activities in a place where the constraints of the physical world do not apply.
This is the traditional definition of the metaverse. Beyond the traditional functions, the metaverse can have a functionally extended description. The extended, here considered real metaverse is a special kind of extension of the physically existing real world into virtual space, in which the animate and inanimate contents of the real world can be represented in an active, self-operating form, can interact with each other in virtual space, and the interactions can lead to results in the real world.
In the real metaverse, not only can contents from the real world be represented, but the metaverse can also represent itself in the real world through active interactions. The real metaverse not only creates connections and provides a place of activity in virtual space for the contents that exist in reality, but it is also capable of operating and coordinating between the contents represented in it on its own, while at the same time serving, realizing, and fulfilling the goals of the represented contents that exist in reality, and thus capable of functioning in a way that creates benefits for the actually existing represented society. The real metaverse is an entity that exists and functions on its own in the reality.
How to create and operate a (real) metaverse specified above?
The metaverse is a virtual space that exists only as information and between data operations that function digitally using the tools of networked computing and algorithms of computational instructions. The connection between the real metaverse and the contents of the real world (including human users and other physical objects represented in the metaverse) is established by data interfaces, which also allow the use of natural conversations for realizing the communication of relevant data between the real world and the virtual space. The real metaverse, in its operation, categorizes the information about the real world provided to it according to the relevant content of the real world and assigns relations to these categories that appropriately represent reality. The real-world content related with the metaverse continuously provides new information to the metaverse, what the metaverse processes according to the categorization and relational operations associated with the relevant content. The real metaverse contains and actively organizes the information related to the real world according to the perceived relationships.
According to this description, the functionality of the real metaverse is based on the principles of deep learning artificial intelligence. However, the artificial intelligence that would operate a metaverse in this way is not only operating for analyzing the relationships between the data provided to it and generatively creating new information from them. The purpose of the functioning of a real metaverse operated by artificial intelligence is to use the provided data to perform autonomous active operations on the represented content, as determined according to the requirements of the content.
The subjects of the operations performed in the metaverse, and the results of these operations are transmitted between the metaverse and the physical world through interfaces that also allow various forms of natural communication. In the real metaverse, the role of content that exists in the real world and is represented in the metaverse, in addition to the regular communication of the information it represents in the metaverse, is complemented by fundamental functions that are difficult to realize and implement artificially in the virtual world, but which exist naturally in the real world, are the formation of meaning and the creation of intent associated with the represented content. These extended functions are represented by the external content and executed by the virtual agents that represent that content in the real metaverse, operating through deep learning generative artificial intelligence. In the real metaverse, the physically existing contents are actively represented by the virtual agents created and functioning in the metaverse according to the meaning and intent conveyed based on the information provided by the contents.
An illustrative demonstration of how a real metaverse works can be described as how a real sale can be conducted with the cooperation of the metaverse. Suppose one person wants to sell a property and another person wants to buy a property, and this sale is conducted in the real metaverse by creating virtual agents for the selling and buying task, for accomplishment the sale.
The seller, a real person, creates a virtual agent to represent the action of selling in the metaverse, using natural language describing the seller's instructions representing meaning and intent: metaverse, create an agent to sell my (specified) property.
The virtual agent created for the sale uses the information available to it to identify the task, collects the details of the property owned by the person, adds the information it determines to be relevant based on the information represented in its large language database and by communicating it in an interactive, natural dialog with the content, and then publishes the sale status in the metaverse.
The buyer, a real person, in accordance with his or her own meaning and intention, expressed in natural language, creates another virtual agent in the metaverse, representing his or her intention to buy: metaverse, create an agent to buy me a (specified) property.
Using the information available to it, the virtual agent created for the purpose of the purchase identifies the task, collects the details of the property that match the person's options and needs, adds the remaining relevant information based on the information represented in its large language database and by communicating it in an interactive, natural dialog with the real person, and after publishing the purchase intent in the metaverse.
The two virtual agents find each other in the metaverse through active search and, according to the specified intentions, they carry out a negotiation process, either independently or with the involvement of the relevant real people, using their interactive participation as needed and required in a natural form of communication. After an agreement reached by the virtual agents and the approval of the persons representing the intentions, the agents carry out, also in the metaverse, the administration of the sale that will become valid in the real world, according to the laws and rules of society.
The whole process takes place in the real metaverse. The external actively cooperating contents provide meaning (the property represents ownership and value) and determine intention (sale), and the virtual agents act autonomously according to the instructions that determine the represented meaning and intention by actively using the available information in context.
A real metaverse functioning in this way is a continuously operating entity, existing for the external contents, actively representing them, interactively experienced by them, but also functioning independently from them. The real metaverse is capable of performing any task defined by the specification of the meaning and intention represented by the external contents, and what is potentially realizable using the information the real metaverse contains, by the result of the way it functions.
Beyond classical forms of data flow, the real metaverse is connected by visual and natural language communication to content that exists in physical space, it is private and communal, it has active functionality that interacts with reality, and the products and services it provides have value in the real world. Such a potentially realizable virtually existing real metaverse can already be created and can be operated using currently available computational tools and methods. This might be the next big thing in technology development.
