A society functions effectively when its members can freely participate in the sustenance of society in accordance with their own will, while maintaining the rules of society. The intent of the members of society can be fulfilled if society functions according to the values of democracy.
However, democracy is complicated and difficult to run properly. Democracy is a much more complex process to maintain than autocracy. Still, for a society that chooses the path of democracy, it is enough to maintain only two fundamental operating principles.
For democracy to work effectively, the following principles must be upheld and accepted by the members of society.
1. Acceptance of leadership of the majority by the minority
Society can function effectively if the majority can be a useful part of society. Because human nature is inherently selfish, the majority of society can become a more useful part of society when society is led by the (real, and not manipulated) majority, directed by leaders appointed by the majority, and the leadership appointed by the majority is accepted by the minority.
2. Positive discrimination of the minority by the majority
Society can function effectively if the minority can be a useful part of society. Because human nature inherently rejects the difference, the minority in a society can become a more useful part of society if the minority receives advantages in the functioning of society and the advantages granted to the minority are accepted by the majority.
A society can function effectively when society is capable of democracy, when its members are able to accept and uphold the two principles that make democracy work, when the society functions according to rules established in the framework of these principles.
